Apicoectomy (Endodontic Microsurgery)

Generally, a root canal is all that is needed to save teeth with injured pulp from extraction. Occasionally, this non-surgical procedure will not be sufficient to heal the tooth and microsurgery is recommended. Endodontic microsurgery can be used to find fractures and hidden canals, repair damaged root surfaces and remove bacteria. An apicoectomy, or root-end resection, is the most common surgery used to save damaged teeth. During this simple procedure, the damaged tissue and end of the root are removed and a root-end filling is placed to prevent reinfection. Over the course of several months, bone naturally heals around the root and full function is restored to the tooth.
