Traumatic Injuries

Dislodged Teeth

Traumatic mouth injuries can cause teeth to be pushed back into their sockets. If this happens, the tooth may be repositioned and stabilized by your endodontist or general dentist. Root canal treatment is usually started within a few weeks, and eventually a permanent root canal filling is placed.

If the tooth is pushed partially out of the socket, it may also be repositioned and stabilized. If the pulp stays healthy, no other treatment is required. If the pulp is damaged or becomes infected, root canal treatment will be required.

Avulsed Teeth (knocked out)

If a tooth is completely knocked out, you must seek treatment immediately! If possible, replace the tooth in the socket. A tooth may be saved if it is kept moist. You can place the tooth in milk until you reach your endodontist or general dentist. The length of time the tooth was out and the way in which it was stored can affect treatment.
